If you've been living with reflux for a while, you'll know how quietly it takes over. It starts with the odd bout of heartburn after a big meal, and before you know it, you're planning your whole day around what might set it off. As a reflux nutritional therapist in Edinburgh, I see this every week, and I want you to know it doesn't have to stay that way.

I've just completed my certification as a Digestion with Confidence: Managing Reflux practitioner, training with Debbie Grayson, and I wanted to share what that means for you and why reflux support deserves more than a repeat prescription.

Does This Sound Familiar?

So many of the people I speak to recognise themselves in at least one of these:

  • Popping an omeprazole most mornings without really thinking about it any more, it's just part of the routine now

  • Dreading a meal out because you already know how it's going to end

  • A celebration glass of prosecco leaving you paying for it half the night

  • Lying awake with that burning feeling creeping up your chest just as you're trying to sleep

  • Cutting out foods you love "just in case" without knowing if they're the real culprit

  • That bloated, uncomfortable feeling after eating, even after a normal-sized meal

  • Wondering if you'll be on medication like this forever

If any of that rings a bell, you're not alone, and you're certainly not imagining it. Reflux is incredibly common, yet it's often treated as something you just have to live with.

What Is Reflux, in Plain English?

Reflux happens when stomach contents travel back up into the food pipe (oesophagus), causing that familiar burning, sour taste or discomfort in the chest and throat. There's a little valve at the top of the stomach that's meant to keep everything where it belongs. When that valve isn't closing as well as it should, or there's extra pressure from below, things can creep back up.

What's worth knowing is that reflux is a symptom, not a full explanation. Two people can have exactly the same heartburn for completely different reasons.

How a Reflux Nutritional Therapist in Edinburgh Can Help

Medications like omeprazole and lansoprazole (known as PPIs, or proton pump inhibitors) reduce the amount of acid your stomach makes. For many people they bring real relief, and they absolutely have their place. You can read more about them on the NHS website.

But they don't answer the question of why the reflux is happening in the first place. Common patterns I look at include:

  • Eating habits: eating quickly, large late meals, or eating on the go

  • Stress: your gut and nervous system are closely linked, and a busy, wired body often digests less comfortably

  • How well food moves through the gut: if things are sluggish further down, pressure can build upwards

  • Food triggers: these are very individual, which is why generic "avoid" lists often leave people cutting out far more than they need to

  • Longer-term PPI use: stomach acid plays a role in digestion and absorbing certain nutrients, so it's worth reviewing long-term use with your GP rather than letting it run on autopilot

How a Reflux Nutritional Therapist Can Help

My role isn't to diagnose, and it's never to replace your GP. It's to look at the bigger picture of your digestion, spot the patterns, and build a plan that works for your real life.

With my reflux training, that can include:

  • Supporting a safe, structured reduction in PPIs where appropriate, done gradually and always in conversation with your GP. Stopping these medications suddenly can cause a rebound in symptoms, so this is never something to do alone

  • Getting to the root of what's driving your reflux, whether that's diet, stress, gut movement or something else entirely

  • Building a plan that fits your life, meals out and celebrations included, rather than a long list of foods you're not allowed

As a registered nurse as well as a naturopathic nutritional therapist, I understand both sides: the medical picture and the everyday reality of living with symptoms. That means we can work together sensibly and safely, whether you're here in Edinburgh or further afield.

When to Speak to Your GP First

Please always see your GP if you notice difficulty or pain when swallowing, unexplained weight loss, vomiting, blood in vomit or stools, or symptoms that are new and persistent, especially if you're over 55. These need checking properly before anything else.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I come off omeprazole naturally? For some people, a gradual reduction is possible with the right support, but it should always be agreed with your GP. I work alongside your GP to make any reduction safe and structured.

Do I have to cut out lots of foods? Not usually. Triggers are personal, and part of the work is finding out what genuinely affects you so you can stop avoiding things unnecessarily.

Can stress really cause reflux?Stress doesn't always cause it on its own, but it can make digestion less comfortable and symptoms more noticeable. It's one of the patterns worth looking at.

Where can I find reflux support in Edinburgh?I offer reflux support sessions in Edinburgh and online, working alongside your GP to help you understand what's driving your symptoms.

Do you work with people outside Edinburgh?Yes, online sessions mean I can support you wherever you are in the UK.

Ready to Stop Just Managing It?

If you've been living with reflux for months or even years, it doesn't have to stay that way. You deserve to enjoy a meal out, raise a glass at a celebration, and sleep through the night without that familiar burn.

If this sounds like you, I'd love to chat. Book a free discovery call and we can talk through where you're at and whether working together feels right.
