How Naturopathic Nutrition and Chiropractic Care Work Together for Lasting Pain Relief

If you have tried everything for your back pain, your joint stiffness, or that exhaustion that sleep never quite fixes, you are not alone. So many people in Edinburgh move from practitioner to practitioner feeling better for a few days before the same symptoms creep back in.

The reason is often simple. Pain that keeps returning is rarely just a structural problem. There is usually a nutritional picture underneath it that nobody has looked at yet.

This week I visited Edinburgh Chiropractic Clinic to meet Jayne Brassington, Clinical Director and one of the most highly qualified chiropractors in Scotland, and it confirmed something I already believed strongly: chiropractic care and naturopathic nutrition are far more powerful together than either is alone.

Why Structural Treatment Alone Is Not Always Enough

Chiropractic care addresses alignment, joint mobility and the nervous system. It is an essential part of resolving pain, improving mobility and supporting recovery after pregnancy, injury or years of poor posture.

But the body does not heal in isolation. Underneath every joint, muscle and disc is a biochemical environment that either supports healing or actively works against it.

This is where nutrition comes in.

Inflammation and the Gut Connection

Chronic inflammation is one of the most common reasons pain keeps returning despite consistent treatment. Diet, gut health and the balance of bacteria in the microbiome all directly influence how inflamed the body is. An inflamed gut can drive systemic inflammation that settles in the joints and soft tissue, undoing some of the progress made through structural treatment.

Magnesium and Muscle Tension

Magnesium deficiency is extremely common and plays a direct role in how well muscles relax. Without enough magnesium, muscles around the spine can stay tight no matter how many adjustments a person has, making lasting change harder to achieve.

Collagen, Vitamin C and Connective Tissue

Spinal discs, ligaments and tendons rely on collagen as their main structural protein, and the body needs vitamin C to produce it. Supporting collagen synthesis through diet and targeted nutrients can directly support the tissues that chiropractic care works to align.

Nutrient Depletion After Pregnancy

For many women, postnatal recovery is significantly slowed by nutrient depletion. Iron, B12, zinc, omega 3s and iodine are often dramatically reduced after birth and during breastfeeding, which can affect tissue repair, energy levels and mood for months or even years afterwards.

A Joined Up Approach to Women's Health and Pain

Jayne holds a postgraduate degree in Clinical Chiropractic Paediatrics and Pregnancy from Palmer College in the USA, completed with distinction, a qualification held by only a handful of chiropractors in Scotland. Her work with pregnant women, new mothers and babies pairs naturally with the nutritional support I offer as a Naturopathic Nutritional Therapist.

Together, we can look at a client's pain or recovery from both angles at once. Structure and alignment from Jayne. Inflammation, nutrient status and gut health from me. It is a genuinely complementary partnership, not a duplication of effort.

Signs You Might Benefit from Both Approaches

You may benefit from combining chiropractic care with nutritional support if you recognise any of the following:

  • Pain that improves temporarily after treatment but always returns

  • Ongoing fatigue that does not improve with rest

  • Joint or muscle pain alongside digestive symptoms

  • Slow recovery after pregnancy or birth

  • Chronic stiffness despite regular structural treatment

  • A sense that something is happening in the body that has not yet been explained
